DESTABILIZING: COUNTER-PROPPING

Destabilizing: Counter-Propping.

2018-In process

  • Sculpture: marble, wood, natural fiber, and metal.

Puebla, Mexico.

This artistic work proposes, from drawing, photography, and installation, possible "precarious" ways of destabilizing monuments: questioning the solidity of its base and its verticality from minimum elements of counterweight, power, force, gravity, and instability.

STABILIZE/ DESTABILIZE is artistic speculation regarding the menhir and the obelisk as "instruments" that institute -in their solemnity- a type of power and distribution of space: a change of the landscape in formal terms, but also symbolic.

This plastic speculation resorts as a motive to two elements: the menhir and the obelisk. The menhir is considered the zero grade of the monument, but also of architecture and landscape, along with the obelisk are the first "public" instruments that institute in its phallic verticality the embodiment of a higher power; a symbolic power obsolete in aesthetic terms, but that has permeated in various aesthetic transformations of the monument and public sculpture to this day.
