Santa Inés Ahuatempan.
Puebla, México.

“Paths of the Tongue. Other Ways of Orienting Oneself” is both a reflection and a writing exercise by Ngiba artist Ulises Matamoros Ascención. It is also a first attempt to share the ways in which what is commonly referred to as “territory” is understood from a Ngiba worldview. These pages offer a few “norths” that barely glimpse the horizon of Ngiba thought.

This volume emerged from an invitation by Lorena Mal to Ulises Matamoros to contribute a text to her project Fosilífera, following several walks through the town of Santa Inés Ahuatempan. These walks, guided by the Ngiba community gathered around the communal space Chasen Thajni, have found resonance in this printed publication—the third title from the independent publishing project Ediciones Chasen Thajni.

This book not only shares but offers—partially, always partially—a portion of this collective knowledge. Made with love from within Ngiba territory, it includes illustrations by Ulises Matamoros Ascención and Lenka Holíková.

Presented as an artist’s book in a limited edition of only 10 copies, this version also includes original drawings, sketches, and notes by the author.

Ediciones Chasen Thajni deeply thanks Alejandra Ascención Colmena, Catalina Sillero Colmena, Silvia Rivera Marín, and Ulises Matamoros himself for the Ngiba-Spanish / Spanish-Ngiba translations.
